Applications are invited for an eight-week internship in the English Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for Summer 2021, led by Prof. Rachael King (UCSB) in partnership with Prof. Emily Kugler (Howard University). The fully funded internship will involve digitizing and computationally analyzing the Ballitore Collection, an archive of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century correspondence held at UCSB's Special Research Collections. The materials relate to the Quaker community of Ballitore, Ireland, and include discussion of women writers, slavery and abolition, Quakerism and religious debates, and dreams. Students will work on creating a digital database of the materials and analyze it using digital humanities techniques such as social network analysis and topic modeling.

The internship is funded through the UC-HBCU Initiative. Interns will receive:

$4,000 stipend
Room and board
Travel to and from Santa Barbara
Other travel for activities within Southern California
Workshops on applying to and succeeding in graduate school

Four BA and/or MA students from Howard University will be chosen for the project. To apply, please send a cover letter and resume by Friday, Nov. 27, to both rking@english.ucsb.edu and Emily.Kugler@howard.edu. Please contact Prof. King with any questions or visit ballitore.english.ucsb.edu.
